The awkward questions

What sits behind the renewable-energy claim?

Is this a giant new data centre taking over farmland?

Glomfjord is an industrial town just above the Arctic Circle. Nscale says the town’s industry grew around a 120MW hydropower plant built more than a century ago.

The data centre sits in Glomfjord Industrial Park. The March 2025 expansion announcement describes an existing 30MW facility being expanded towards 60MW. That is good evidence of industrial-site reuse, but we have not independently audited every construction impact or land-use decision.

What powers it?

Nscale reports that Glomfjord runs on 100% renewable electricity generated by the region’s hydropower dams. It also reports a stable local oversupply of renewable power.

This is a facility-level supplier claim, not a live meter attached to each Treechat answer. It does not prove that every request used Glomfjord or remove the life-cycle impact of dams, servers, chips and construction.

What about water?

Nscale describes a closed-loop cooling system that uses cold water from the nearby fjord. It reports an intake temperature of 6–9°C and an outlet temperature of about 34°C.

That is materially different from evaporating drinking-quality water, but it is not “no water use.” Water withdrawal, thermal discharge and the equipment itself still matter, and Treechat does not hold independently verified water-consumption data for the facility.

Where does the heat go?

Nscale says heated water is channelled to a nearby fish farm to warm aquaculture tanks. Its published target is to repurpose about 85% of the facility’s waste heat this way.

Other ideas, including heating a community pool or local roads, are described as possibilities rather than completed projects. We keep that distinction because a target is not a measured result.

Does the local community benefit?

Nscale says it works with local electricians, contractors and technical teams to build and maintain the site. It is also an approved apprenticeship company in Nordland County and reports hosting local students aged 16–18 at the facility.

These are useful, specific commitments. They are still supplier-reported claims; Treechat has not independently counted local jobs or assessed the programme’s long-term outcomes.

Why should I trust any of this?

You should not have to take Treechat’s word for it. The capacity, power source, cooling design, heat-reuse target and apprenticeship programme are linked here at the source.

Most of the detailed evidence currently comes from Nscale itself. Treechat does not have an independent facility audit or per-request location attestation. If routing or the evidence changes, this page needs to change with it.

The honest boundary

A renewable data centre does not make AI impact-free.

Hydropower still has infrastructure and ecological impacts. Servers and chips have embodied emissions. Cooling still moves water and heat. A failed request can cross more than one provider before it succeeds.

Glomfjord is one strong part of Treechat’s infrastructure story. It is not the whole system, and we will not stretch its evidence across routes it does not cover.
